HavenDOS
0.8.8.1Helios Beta, released 31 October 2026: mouse readiness, read-only exFAT, big-integer arithmetic and console improvements. Release documentation reports QEMU and test-suite results; real HP hardware tests are still requested.
- →[What is Helios?] HavenDOS 0.8.8.1, codename Helios, is a Beta-channel release of the independent 32-bit x86 operating system. This page records the supplied release facts; it does not certify hardware compatibility.
- →[What changed] Mouse readiness supports PS/2 and registered USB HID mice.
- →[What changed] exFAT volumes are readable in read-only mode.
- →[What changed] Limb-based big-integer arithmetic was added and checked against CPython/OpenSSL.
- →[What changed] Console grid settings persist, and resolution fit is available.
- →[What changed] Kernel polling work was moved to the desktop's active keyboard path.
- →[Source code] The matching HavenDOS 0.8.8.1 source ZIP and ISO are available in the Downloads section above. The archive version header identifies Helios Beta 0.8.8.1; its ZIP integrity check passes. This does not mean the OS test suites were independently rerun.
- →[Update instructions] Back up files and use a disposable QEMU environment first. README-FIRST describes staging a matched havendos.elf and update.inf using Update-HavenDOS.cmd on Windows or sudo ./stage-havendos-update.sh on Linux, then running update in HavenDOS from a non-live boot entry. The uploaded source ZIP has no ready-to-use update/ folder or built kernel payload; rescue/README-UPDATE.md describes an older 0.8.5.6 payload. Do not use that older payload as Helios. A matching Helios update bundle is still needed before following those staging instructions.
- →[Compatibility notes] The documented mouse-readiness path covers PS/2 and registered USB HID mice. This does not establish compatibility with every mouse, hub or laptop.
- →[QEMU and test-suite results] Release documentation reports 4062 suite checks and 32 QEMU boot checks. These are documentation-reported test-suite and QEMU results, not independently rerun here and not proof of hardware compatibility. Big-integer checks against CPython/OpenSSL do not establish a tested TLS connection.
- →[Known limitations] exFAT is read-only. NTFS and ext4 are not implemented.
- →[Known limitations] A real TLS handshake is not claimed as tested.
- →[Known limitations] Fresh installation does not create a firmware boot entry automatically.
- →[Known limitations] USB devices behind hubs may require a manual rescan.
- →[Hardware-test status] Real HP hardware tests for Helios are still requested. No completed Helios HP hardware test is claimed. The earlier HP demonstration belongs to HavenDOS 0.8.1, not this release.
- →[Hardware-test status] docs/HELIOS-HARDWARE-TEST.md is included in the matching source archive. It requests Live-entry testing of display settings, mouse paths, exFAT and TLS on the HP. No completed Helios HP test or real TLS handshake is claimed.
